Morris County School of Technology Healthcare Students Had a Busy Summer

Denville, NJ (9/14/09) – Students in the Academy for Health Care Sciences at the Morris County School of Technology are members of Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), which promotes the education and training of young people who plan to become health care professionals.

Eight students in the Academy for Health Care Sciences traveled to Nashville to take part in the HOSA National Leadership Conference. Attending were Kathleen Rowe, Elizabeth Callahan, Subhan Syed, Kristyne Gambino, Matt Sullivan, Dan Santiago, Daenielle Lang and Teja Chakilam.

Subhan placed second in Concepts of Health Care and eighth place went to Kris Gambino. The Conference has broadened the students’ knowledge of the HOSA organization to bring student leadership to a new level.

Three students attended the 10 day National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine. Yaw Danso, Faizan Munshi and Corinne DeBoer had the opportunity to explore careers and have hands-on with medical professionals. They participated in simulations in ethics, disaster response, and the residency match process. An actual viewing of a total knee replacement surgery included questions and answers with the surgeon. Finally, they took part in an emergency public health simulation.

The objectives of the Academy for Health Care Sciences are to provide varied experiences for high school students interested in a career within the health care industry.
