The goal of the Eat Smart, Move More movement here at the Morris County School of
Technology is to promote a healthy lifestyle through proper nutrition and dietary
choices as well encouragement of increased physical activity.
The incentive for the movement is to combat obesity and its ill effects upon
teenage children. The Morris County
School of Technology implemented a committee comprised of administrators, a public
relations representative, health educators, counselors, teachers and a school nurse
in 2007 in order to spearhead this movement.
Fitness Testing for Physical Education
For the students at Morris County School of Technology, they are tested on their
physical fitness in the beginning and end of the school year in physical education.
The exercises they are required to perform are pull ups (muscle strength), pushups
and sit-ups in one minute (muscle endurance), sit and reach (flexibility) and 12
min run (cardio respiratory endurance). The students work on improving their physical
fitness by practicing these exercises throughout the school year in physical education
class. The goals for the fitness testing are for the students to observe how physically
fit they are and for them to practice their exercises outside of school to improve
for the next testing session. A specific rubric is set up for boys and girls to
see where they stand for each exercise component.
