1. Keep your passwords private, even from your best friend! Your online service
will never ask for them, so neither should anyone else.
2. Use only your Log-in Name and/or e-mail address when chatting or sending
e-mail. Never give out personal information like your name, address, or phone
number.
3. Always delete unknown e-mail attachments. They can contain destructive viruses.
4. Remember that nothing you write on the Web is completely private -- including
e-mail. So be careful and think about what you type and who you tell.
5. People are not always as nice, cute, or funny as they may sound online. Never
make plans to meet an online "friend" in person.
| Careful! People online may not always be who they say they are! (Can you tell if the 16 year old basketball player is really 16? Maybe he's really 42 year old man!) | |
| Hang on to your personal info! Never give out your @ or home address, or where you go to school. (This includes sports teams! Games are often published in the newspapers, making it easy for anyone to find the team on which you play!) Also, don't send pictures of yourself! | |
| Arranging to meet is dangerous. Never arrange to meet any offline unless you are sure who they are and then only in a public place and only with a parent or other responsible adult. | |
| Tell your friends or an adult if you come across something
that makes you feel uncomfortable. |
Do you find yourself forwarding (with the best of intentions) email virus warnings? Check them out before you clutter up your friends inboxes!
