| ART CONCEPT: | Learning to apply the style of a master artist to interpret a photograph | ||
| TIME REFERENCE: | Approximately 12 days | ||
| Each student in the class was instructed to look through Art History books to locate three master artists from the Renaissance to the present day. The stipulation was that the masters selected should represent different artistic styles and movements. After completion of the first master emulation, a decision was reached as to which of the two remaining artists would be next. The decision was based on stylistic similarities, complexity, time constraints, and knowledge acquired from the first master. In the end, students emulated only two of the three masters selected due to curriculum and time constraints. | |||

Sketch assignments - concurrent homework
Sketch assignments are given on a regular basis in my classes. The frequency is usually one a week. These are assignments that students complete on their own time as homework.
All my assignments are posted regularly on the Internet and students can access the assignments page and the linked samples via our school's home page or they can go directly to the assignments page for my classes which is located at:
http://www.geocities.com/arteacher1.geo/assignmnt.htm
The assignments run concurrently with the lessons and serve to reinforce basic drawing skills, aesthetic understanding and specific techniques.
DEFINITIONS
· Impasto - thick passages of paint applied to a painting. Usually on the light areas. (ex. Rembrandt)
· Glaze - Paint mixed with medium to make a thin transparent layer of color for gradual build-up (ex. DaVinci)
· Scumbling - heavy paint dragged over the surface of a canvas or dried brushstrokes and deposited on the high spots only. This causes optical blending of colors
· Optical blending - the way colors placed on a canvas can appear to "blend" to form another color without actually having been mixed. (ex. Seurat)
· Painterly approach - A painting style that makes full use of brushwork and physical textures (ex. Delacroix, Van Gogh & Rubens)
· Linear approach - A painting style that concentrates on clearly defined objects and even edges of objects. The paint is usually carefully blended and smooth. (ex. Ingres, Gerome, & Estes)
