Lesson Plan:  Business Cards

(This is a simple activity I use usually before a holiday)

BUSINESS CARDS

Objectives:

Students will learn how to

            -         create labels and enter text

-         add a WordArt Logo

-         format the label sheet for printing

  Materials:

        -         card stock (any color)

        -         Microsoft Word 97

        -        student disk

  Focus:

          -         walk students through the steps listed

  Activity:

              Create Labels and Enter Text

  1.      Start a new document

a.      click Tools on the menu bar

b.      click Envelopes and Labels

c.      click Labels tab

  2.      Click Options, then scroll the Product Number list box until 5371Business Card appears

  3.      Click 5371Business Card to select it, click OK, then click New Document

  4.      Type James Rene

a.      click Insert on the menu bar

b.      click Symbol

c.      click (normal text) as the Font type

d.  click é

d.      click Insert

e.      click close

f.        save the document on your disk as Business Cards for James Rene

  5.      Press Enter once, then enter the remaining text (below) for the business card

6.      Select the six lines of text, change the font to Bookman Old Style,  click the Center button, then enhance James Rene with Bold and a font size of 12 and Computer Analyst with Bold

  7.      Click the Zoom Control list arrow, then click Whole Page view

  8.      Click the Zoom Control list arrow, click 100%, then save the business cards

Add a WordArt Logo

  1.      Click to the left of the J in James, display the Drawing toolbar, then click the WordArt button

  2.      Select the second option from the left, then click OK

  3.      Type JR, change the font style to Arial, then change the font size to 20 point

4.      Drag the WordArt object to the top-left corner of the first business card

5.      Click the Shadow button on the Drawing toolbar, then click Shadow Style 9

 6.      Click the Copy button on the Standard toolbar, then click the Paste button

  7.      Drag the copy of the logo to the top-left corner of the second business card in the row

  8.      Save the document

Format the Label Sheet for Printing

  1.      Point in the margin to the left of the cell containing the text and log, then click the left mouse button to select the top two cells

  2.      Click Tools, then be sure the Full page of the same label option is selected

3.      Right-click the selected text in the Address box, then click  Paragraph on the pop-up menu

4.      In the alignment section, choose Centered alignment, then click OK

5.      Select the first line of text in the Address box, right-click it, click Font on the pop-up menu, then choose Arial font and 12 point

  6.      Select the second line of text in the Address box, right-click the pop-up menu, click Font on the pop-up menu, then choose Arial font

  7.      Click Print

              Have students complete business cards for themselves

This activity allows students to explore some of the features of WORD and increase their critical thinking skills.
