III.              OBJECTIVES

 

1.      The student will determine the casualties of the Civil War and the effect on society at the time.

2.      The student will analyze how the number of casualties affected the victor of a battle.

3.      The student will use a database and graph to evaluate casualties of the Civil War.

 A Nation Divided, The US Civil War, 1861-1865 – This site has very good information and the timeline is easy to read.  It is set up by years and within each year are specific events with dates that include the month and day.  Along with the events there are pictures for each year.  If you want to organize the events of the Civil War, this is a good site to put it into perspective.

Timeline of the Civil War – Each page of this site includes one year of the 5-year war—1861, 1862, 1863, 1864, 1865.  There are links at the bottom of each page to connect to each year.  Each year contains events which includes the month and a brief explanation of the event.

Ben’s Civil War Virtual Museum – This is a timeline of battles that lists the name of the battle, date, officers involved, US and Confederate losses, and the victor.  There are hot links to certain battles as well as to the officers.  This site also plays music.

Civil War Battle Statistics, Commanders, and Casualties – This site offers a list of battles, the officer involved, the number of soldiers, and the number of casualties.  This is set up in a chart form which makes it very easy to access the information.

Chronological List of Civil War Battles – This site offers a list of battles by year.  Each year is a link.  The battle includes the number of casualties for both the US and Confederate.  This is not the most interesting site and it is not presented in an inviting format.

The Price of Blood, Casualties in the Civil War – This site discusses some of the battles of the Civil War.  It gives statistics on the casualties, percent of loss, as well as some details on the battle.  It also offers some personal data, such as the number of men killed from one family.

This site lists the 10 costliest Battles of the Civil War.  It is based on total casualties (killed, wounded, missing and captured).  It also included the location of the battle, the Confederate Commander, the Union Commander, and victor.

Military History On line – This site offers a break down of information on the battles of Antietam, Gettysburg, and Vicksburg.  There are links to each of the battles and further links which connects you to each day of the battle.  There is a detailed description of the battle and it includes the casualties incurred.

The Civil War, An Online Study Guide, 1861-1865 – This site offers a number of good links.  “Numbers” will give you a statistical chart.  “Casualties” will link you to time periods during the war that includes casualties of certain battles.  This site has a lot of information but you have to do a lot of searching.

VII.   DESCRIPTION OF PLAN

 

v    Students will use websites/databases below to research information on casualties of the Civil War.

In addition to these sites, students may investigate the other sites listed in the resources.

 

 

v    Students will make a database of the casualties of the Civil War including the name of the battle, the Commanders for the North and South, the number of casualties for each side, and the victor of the battle.

v    The students will graph this information using Microsoft Excel.  The graph will include names of 10 battles, the casualties of each side, and the victor of the battle.

v    Once the database and graph are made, each student will write an obituary for a newspaper for a fictitious person.  They will include the name of the person, a background of the person, what side he fought for, the name of the battle he died in, the number of casualties in that battle, and who won the battle.

The following point system will be used to evaluate the student’s mastery of this lesson.
