Introduction
The factory located outside of town has polluted your community making it unlivable. The town mayor has asked you, a local architect, to create and establish a new community located a safe distance away from your current town. You will take what you have learned about the three community types to make your decisions. After creating the new community you must map out the town and include a proposal suporting your decisions.

Task
If you were given the opportunity to create your own community what would it be like?

The Process and Resources
In this WebQuest you will be working with a partner. Each pair will create a new community in which to live. As pairs, you will explore Webpages from communities around your area of NJ. Before you can create a new community however, you must have an understanding of the three community types: Rural, Suburban and Urban. Use the dictionary to find a basic defination of each.

Phase 1 - Background: Something for Everyone
Use the Internet links below to explore examples of the three community types and list three characteristics of each type in your research logs.

Phase 2 - Looking Deeper from Different Perspectives
After looking at examples of the different community types, it is up to you and your partner to decide on what characteristics your community will have. You must decide the following things:

-What is your community type?
(Rural, Suburban or Urban)
-What businesses will you have, if any?
-What laws/rules will be established?
-Where will your businesses be located?
-What types of jobs will you have?
-Where will the people live?
-What is the name of your community?

Phase 3 - Debating, Discussing, and Reaching Consensus
Now that you have explored the different types of communities and have made a list of the characteristics for your ideal community, you must now make your final decissions. You and your partner must create a layout of your community and map out all of the important buildings (i.e. schools, businesses, houses etc.) and any landmarks (i.e. lakes, rivers etc.) Once the map has been created and colored (remember to include a compus and scale) you must write a proposal explaining your decisions.

Phase 4 - Real World Feedback
Once you have finished designing your community and a map has been created to show the basic layout, you and your partner will present the finished community to the class by using your proposal as an outline. All maps and proposals will be posted on our 'Community Creations' bulletin board where students may 'visit' them.

Grading will be based on the visual layout of your community and the trueness of your characteristics to the community type used.

Conclusion
Now that you have created our new comunity, we the citizens would like to thank you for your hard work. You and your partner conducted excellent research and made important decisions to give us the community we see before us today. You now have a better understanding of the three community types and what each has to offer. You should be proud of yourselves for all your hard work. Great Job!
