12th Grade Initiative

The Grade 12 Initiative program permits students who qualify under County College of Morris’ requirements to participate in dual enrollment on the campus, while continuing to be enrolled at MCST, the full senior year. Students can earn up to 22 college credits, paid for by the Morris County Vocational School District. Students receive a preliminary transcript at the start of their senior year, listing courses they have completed. In it college credits will be displayed, college credits received upon successful completion of the four-year program.
Qualifications include a 500 or greater in the both the language and mathematics sections of the SAT Reasoning Test. Students who do not pass or have not taken the exam must take and pass the CCM Admissions Exam in order to qualify.
Students who wish to enroll in Calculus 1 or 2 at the college during the fall or spring semesters require passing the college’s Advanced Mathematics Placement Test for qualification. In addition, extra classes may be taken at the student’s expense upon availability and scheduling.
Transportation is not included, and is the responsibility of the student's parent(s) or guardian(s). Participation in the Grade 12 Initiative is voluntary and those who do not choose to enroll or fail to meet the requirements will be provided a regular schedule at their respective academy.
An essential component of the Initiative that prepares students for real-world experience and exposure to the workforce during senior year is a technical internship. As part of the graduation requirement, the internship puts students in a worksite of their choice. Students select an industry based on their career interests, working with a workplace mentor to guide them through the three to nine month-long process. Throughout the experience, students maintain updated logs and complete a Senior Project related to their area of study.
In fact, Morris County School of Technology alumni of the Class of 2005 graduated with an average of 23 college credits per individual. This was made possible by the school’s participation in the Twelfth Grade Initiative.
Present and past corporate partners students have worked with include Maxim Magazine, Papermill Playhouse, Randy James DanceWorks, Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company, and the Bickford theatre. Projects involve areas such as technical theater, advertising, screenwriting, dance, choreography, television and radio production, and video game development.
