English 10

Welcome to English 10! 

Coure Description: Sophomore English students will study a selection of classic novels, Shakespearean drama, nonfiction, and poetry. The overarching theme of this year asks students to examine the relationship between themselves and society. In order to become a truly engaged member of our MCST learning community and beyond, it is important that each student develops an appreciation for informed citizenship and grapples with the intricacies of group dynamics. Therefore, particular emphasis is placed on developing research skills, analyzing/implementing rhetorical and persuasive strategies, presentation skills, and actively participating in various group-discussion formats. 

 

Students will be able to:

  • Analyze complex characters and plot development
  • Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis
  • Determine the central idea of a text and trace its development
  • Write arguments to support claims
  • Use technology to produce, publish, and present written work
  • Gather relevant information from authoritative sources and integrate it into writing and presentations
  • Understand the difference between connotation and denotation, as well as figurative and literal meanings of words
